The Accidental Instructional Designer

My name is Deanna Deveau, hence the D2 in D2Academy. I thought long and hard about being clever when it came to naming my company, but figured simple is better than clever and so it began...(jump to my instructional design and technical writing portfolio)

I fell, quite by accident, into the field of technical writing when I was hired to write procedures for a computer engineering firm in Edmonton, Alberta way back in the early 90's. Since then it seems to have permeated my life. Technical writing in my early days included procedures, instructional pamphlets, ad copy and training policy for the City of Edmonton's Planning Department. With my content increasingly focusing on instructional design, I decided to pour my efforts into a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta.

Teaching positions were scarce post graduation. After one term as an ESL teacher in Whistler, British Columbia, I started as a systems analyst managing the I.T. help desk for Whistler Blackcomb Mountain and slipped comfortably back into a technical career.

Technical writing and teaching wove their way throughout the next two decades of my life; paths mostly crossing, but often running parallel. Even my teaching practice required a great deal of technical writing. Diverse instructional design for both online and face-face learning environments provided students with extensive documentation and diagrams. This was especially true when I taught high school Career and Technology Studies.

Deanna (from Alberta) at the 2015 DevLearn Conference in Las VegasAlways striving to learn more and grow my skills, I pursued my Master of Science Degree in 2011. Two years later I bade farewell to my public school career and put my M.Sc. experiences in creating virtual learning environments to further use by launching D2 Academy. My technical writing projects have included documentation for an Alberta based Internet Service Provider, project management for Lacombe County in Alberta, multiple marketing projects, and HTML work for Edmonton based Avatar Media. Instructional Design projects include employee safety training for Red Deer based Alberta Garage Guy Ltd., course contributions to Success4Business (also Red Deer, Alberta based), and modular based "9 Essential Skills" training for English as a Second Language hospitality employees.

My own career and life lessons have been numerous and varied over the years, but the most important skill I have gained along the way is the ability to build relationships. Understanding how to build and foster relationships (both online and face-to-face) is the greatest asset I have to offer. This is vital in allowing me to truly understand my clients' needs, collaborate with any team, and develop exceptional content.
